Welcome to Day #6 of the On Duck Pond Blog Tour!

Shelfieby Jane Yolen
These are Shelfies--photos of a single bookcase in my house. But there must be close to 24 books cases in all. Its a rambling fifteen room New England Victorian farmhouse with book cases in every room, sometimes many bookcases, even in the bathrooms. I choose this one because it's a hodgepodge.
The others include (but are not limited to): pantry--cookbooks, dining room--large art books, tv room--nonfiction history books, music room--music books and two large glassed floor-to-ceiling first editions of my 350 books plus all their various translations. Each of the six bedrooms has its own particular kinds of books, there's a children's nonfiction nature bookcase, and also my library of folklore and other things in the attic.
But this bookcase is very interesting to me and I think should be to anyone wanting to know how I write because it contains fascinating books that I may someday use to start new book ideas. For example, there's a shelf with a book about old tools--is there a picture book start here?
Or a book about the famous P.T. Barnum's elephant Jumbo because I've been thinking for nearly twenty years about a story featuring Jumbo walking the streets of Heaven. A bunch of books about Bible stories because I've just finished a book written with Barbara Diamond Goldin that should be out in 2018 called MEET ME AT THE WELL about girls and women stories in the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).
And perhaps a book about princes. There are five or six shelves worth of these books just waiting for me to find a story or stories in them.

From award-winning and NY Times bestselling children’s author of more than 350 books, Jane Yolen, and award-winning illustrator, Bob Marstall, On Duck Pond is the first sequel to the acclaimed On Bird Hill, which launched the children’s picture book series written for the esteemed Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the world authority on birds.
In On Bird Hill, Yolen and Marstall took readers on a surreal journey with a boy and his dog, as they stopped, looked, and noticed things along their path—ultimately discovering the miracle of the birth of a baby bird. On Duck Pond continues the journey of the boy and dog story, this time in a new place—a serene pond, filled with birds, frogs, turtles and other creatures going about their quiet business. Their intrusion stirs the pond into a cacophony of activity, reaching climactic chaos, before slowly settling back to it’s quiet equilibrium.
This beautiful and enchanting sequel is sure to delight On Bird Hill fans and millions of readers and fans of Jane’s popular classics.
